Budget Addresses Child Abuse
GREEN BAY-- Brown County’s 2013 budget will see a $25 million decrease from the current budget. One of the few spending increases will go toward additional case workers to help victims of child abuse.
Brown County's Department of Human Services is getting 3 more case workers to help handle the projected 5,000 cases of child abuse reported in the county this year.
Brian Shoup heads the Department of Human Services. He says child abuse reports have gone up nearly 30 percent from last year.
"We've had discussions with County Executive Streckenbach on this he's very supportive of making sure we're going to protect the safety of children in this community,” Shoup said.
County leaders are convinced that there aren't really more children being abused, but simply more cases being reported.
The additional case workers will help children and families in Brown County get the help they need. The department is working with organizations like the United Way of Brown County to figure out why the numbers are going up and how to stop it.
The increase in Brown County is similar to a trend statewide.
The next step for the budget is a public hearing November 5th. If approved the budget goes into effect in January of 2013.
