First Lady in Appleton this Friday
APPLETON, WI--Appleton is buzzing about an upcoming visit from the First Lady this week.
According to President Obama's campaign office, Michelle Obama will speak at Lawrence University on Friday. Doors will open to the public at 1:00pm.
Leaders in the Fox Valley say the First Lady's visit is a sign of good things to come for the area.
The business community is very excited, saying while it may not necessarily mean a boost in revenue it could mean potentially better economic development prospects.
As a battleground state, Wisconsin has been getting lots of campaign attention. In the last month, stops from the President and Mitt Romney's wife, Ann, in Milwaukee. And both vice presidential candidates campaigned in Ashwaubenon.
Now it's Appleton's turn with the First Lady's visit on Friday.
"It's very important for people, very exciting," said owner of the Queen Bee restaurant in Appleton, Noor Baha.
Baha says he's looking forward to the national attention Appleton will get.
"She didn't pick Milwaukee or somewhere else. She's coming all the way to Appleton. This is the first time," said Baha.
Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce & Industry leaders say the campaign stop will likely push forward economic development initiatives that draw and retain businesses in the area.
"It certainly sends a message to the rest of the community that maybe when they're looking for a place to put their business, the Fox Cities might not be a bad place to take a look at," said Thom Ciske, VP of Government Affairs for the Chamber.
And while a boost in business isn't a sure thing, business owners like Baha are optimistic.
"I hope she comes here," said Baha.
This will be the First Lady's second visit to Wisconsin this fall. She was in Milwaukee just last month.
