GREEN BAY - Green Bay police and fire commissioners say they're willing to look at a new way of managing the city's public safety.

At this time, the Green Bay police and fire departments are being led by interim chiefs. Now, the city is considering a new way to manage both departments.

Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt says the city is considering the possibility of forming a Director of Public Safety position. The director would oversee both the fire and police departments, instead of having individual chiefs for each one. The mayor says while he's not advocating for the switch just yet, it is something worth studying.

"I think it's an opportunity for the city to take a look at an overall Public Safety Director to manage the 400 people, the 40 million-dollar combined budgets," said Mayor Schmitt.

Over the next few weeks, the mayor will look at the advantages and disadvantages of having a Public Safety Director, and study how the position has worked in other communities. Depending ont the results of the study, the mayor says the next step would be to make a recommendation for the position to city council. Ultimately, Schmitt sayst he goal is to determine which format works best for the city.
