Back to School Safe Driving
GREEN BAY, WI - Families all across Wisconsin are gearing up for back to school. But as students head back to class, police are warning drivers to be cautious.
Green Bay Police are even stepping up patrols to keep kids safe as they head back after summer break.
Josh Gordon and his son Jackson are enjoying the last few days of summer break, knowing back to school is near.
“Hopefully we have people out there, or signs that say slow down and hopefully people see the kids walking,” said Josh Gordon.
He’s always concerned with kids heading back to class, and drivers who might not be paying attention.
“It’s something that you really only think about when you're a parent sometimes, and if you're not a parent you don't really notice what’s going on,” said Gordon.
“You have a 3,500 pound weapon that you’re driving and they don’t stop on a dime,” said Lt. John Laux, with the Green Bay Police Dept.
Officers will be out in full force for the first days back to school, reminding people the speed limit drops from 25-30 mph down to 15 mph.
“You think you're driving the speed limit and almost doubling it,” said Laux.
And if you're sending your teen to school driving for the first time, be sure they know the laws to keep them, and fellow classmates safe.
“We see them as our biggest violators around school zones, especially the high schools,” said Lt. Laux.
Crossing guards will be out about an hour before and after school, but students and parents also have a responsibility.
“They need to stay on the sidewalks, they need to look both ways before crossing the streets,” said Laux.
Green Bay has extra patrols because of money from the Bureau of Traffic Safety.
