Resort guests shaken up by homicide investigation
NEAR STURGEON BAY, Wis.--Door County sheriff's deputies have identified the people involved in a homicide investigation. Thirty-five-year-old Brian Cooper is behind bars in connection with the murder of his girlfriend, 21-year-old Alisha Bromfield. Both are from Plainfield, Illinois, just outside Chicago.
Investigators found Bromfield's body Sunday at Sand Bay Beach Resort, west of Sturgeon Bay. Door County Sheriff Terry Vogel says the pair were in the area for a wedding on Saturday. Around noon on Sunday, Cooper called the sheriff's office, saying he'd killed Bromfield and told investigators where to find her body.
Everybody at Sand Bay Beach Resort is now trying to get back to normal.
But guests Rick and Mary King can't forget what happened.
"We feel very very sad for the people," said Mary King.
Vacationing at the resort is a 40 year tradition for the King family, with their kids and grandkids.They say nothing like this has ever happened. It has always been safe.
"That was the first thing we asked when the officer arrived he said 'you're perfectly safe' they just asked us to stay on the beach," said Mary King.
The Kings say they didn't see or hear anything that could help investigators.
Sheriff's deputies found the body because the suspect, Brian Cooper, called them and turned himself in. Cooper was arrested 35 miles away from the resort at a business in Sister Bay.
"As soon as he made the phone call he waited on the line with our telecommunications division and waited for officers to arrive," said Door County Sheriff, Terry Vogel.
Sand Bay Beach Resort owners say crime is unusual in the area and they're thankful their guests have been understanding.
"It was a little awkward for all of us as can be expected but I want to thank the guests because they have supported us," said owner Dale Stroschein.
No one has checked out, and the kings say they won't hesitate to come back next year.
Sheriff Vogel says Cooper has not been formally charged but Sheriff Vogel is hoping the district attorney will file 1st degree intentional homicide charges.
Cooper is being held in the county jail and will appear in court Tuesday at 1 PM.
