GREEN BAY, Wis.-To be a successful student athlete, it's important to be a team player both on and off the field. Joey Calawerts is a senior at Bay Port High School who plays both baseball and basketball while excelling in the classroom.

“Not only does he do very well in the classroom.. he does very well out on the ball diamond.. just because of his skills. He brings a great skill set, but more importantly, he’s just a great human being. He’s very humble," said Associate Principal Mark Hebert.

Joey takes part in the school's Life of an Athlete program. It's a program that helps teach students about he negative affects of drug and alcohol abuse. He says it's taught him a lot about being a leader.

"I’m a two-sport athlete, so it’s important to me to lead my guys. Without leaders on your team.. it’s hard to have a definite goal for your team, and to go and be successful," he said.

Joey says his coaches at Bay Port have helped to shape him into the person he is today.

"All my coaches have been huge for me.. I can’t describe in words how much they’ve meant to me. They basically taught us how to be leaders.. and how to hold ourselves, carry ourselves. They built the foundation for us as leaders.. and I’m really thankful for them," he said.

All who come in contact with Joey say it's easy to see that his future is bright.

"The future is all his. Just the type of person he is.. he will succeed anywhere. He is a very good young man," said Hebert.

Joey will graduate from Bay Port next month. He plans to attend UW Eau Claire in the fall, where he will play basketball and study business.
