De Pere-- Cardinal Francis George came under fire after referencing the Ku Klux Klam when talking about Chicago’s annual gay pride parade back in December. The cardinal has since apologized for saying some in the gay pride movement used tactics similar to the KKK . Those words prompted a concerned St. Norbert student to start an on-line petition asking the college to cancel its invitation to the cardinal, and that petition sparked dialouge on campus about gay rights.  "That situation initiated a lot of conversation on our campus which is what colleges do, the cardinal says that is terrific that we are talking about it, so I just thought it could not have gone any better, I was really happy,” said college president Thomas Kunkel.

Faculty and students who wanted to make a statement without saying a word, wore rainbow colored ribbons. "It's just kind of representing a togetherness the campus community has about LGBQT that we definitely support them,”  said graduate Nicole Jagielski.

There was no sign of protesters in or around the college. The only sign of anyone taking a stance were those rainbow colored ribbons, worn by about a third of the students and faculty.
