WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) - Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus says she won't run for re-election this year, ending a 10-year tenure marked by criticism over her handling of multiple elections.

Nickolaus's statement Saturday didn't give a reason for her decision. It says election integrity has always been her primary focus, and she's announcing her decision now to give candidates time to mount an effective campaign.

Nickolaus was criticized last year when more than 14,000 votes in Brookfield were omitted from the unofficial totals she reported in a tight state Supreme Court race. The error was announced two days later and flipped the outcome.

She also came under fire when she was slow to post election results from the April 3 primary.

Nickolaus says she hasn't relinquished any authority in upcoming elections this year.
