A Door County woman forced to make an emergency plane landing says good bye to her husband.
Sturgeon Bay, WI-- A Door County woman who was forced to make a dramatic emergency plane landing said good bye to her husband John Collins. The community gathered to pay respects to John Collins in Sturgeon Bay Tuesday. John’s wife Helen took control of the couple's plane and safely landed it after john died of natural causes mid-flight.
John will be remembered by those who knew him best as a good father, grandfather and a hardworking business man. The couple's daughter Susan spoke publicly about the incident for the first time since the crash. "I want to thank you for your interest in this incredible story of bravery by my parents today is a difficult day as we put John Collins to rest we would appreciate some time to reflect on the death of a husband of 59 years a loving father and a supportive grandfather I would like to thank everybody who helped John and Helen land safely back to us,” Susan said.
The family says Helen is not ready to talk about it yet. “Today is a day for our family to celebrate my dad John Collins fulfilling life together with his friends, family and the community of Door county,” Susan said.
John was honored for his military service. Friends say the marine was cool under pressure, a skill he shares with his wife. "Helen is tough just like John, good strong woman and you needed to be a good strong woman to bring that airplane and she took the control and brought it down,” said family friend Paul Kay.
As the Collins family says good bye to John, they celebrate Helen, they remember Helen’s bravery and the landing that brought the couple home safely. Helen Collins suffered some bruises during the flight.
The family says she needs to heal both physically and mentally before making any public comments.
