Deer Collar Concerns
SHAWANO COUNTY, WI - You ask, we investigate. A concerned viewer in Shawano County contacted NBC26 over what she calls the DNR's inhumane method of tracking deer.
She emailed us these pictures she took of a young buck in August 2011. You can see he was recently fitted with a tracking collar. Another picture shows the same deer during the winter with its fur rubbed off its neck. The viewer believes the DNR should "Remove the shackles and find a less traumatic way to track deer."
The DRN addressed her concerns, saying only two bucks have this condition. They say, "It's purely cosmetic and does not injure the deer. As he gets bigger, the collar will stop slipping. Unfortunately there is occasionally physical trauma, but the information gained is very valuable to the population as a whole."
