APPLETON, WI - A private school in Appleton is turned upside down, when more than a dozen teachers suddenly walked off the job. It all started when The Academy sent out a warning to teachers, saying they couldn't make payroll because they were still owed $100,000 in back tuition from parents. But teachers said this wasn't the first time the school has been late with their paychecks.
Students have been taking it hard at the school, saying they still couldn't believe what happened. "It's like a family here," Harper Wendt said. "Having them just leave like that thinking that they all cared about us so much, I've never expected this." Harper has been going to The Academy for many years now and feels like her teachers abandoned her.
Her mother, Beth Wendt also agreed. "The way they did it? Totally unacceptable as a parent." Co-founder, Jody Marriott, said "We all know how the economy is right now, and that plays into people's ability to pay bills." Jody said there was no communication between the teachers and management before this happened, other than the letter given to them this past Saturday, indicating fourteen of them were not going to show up the next school day.
A letter sent to NBC26 by the teacher's attorney stated, "They were told that they would no longer be paid a salary. This was not the first time The Academy struggled to pay teachers appropriately."
Within the next two days, the teachers are expected to share more of their side of the story.
