Oshkosh, WI - It's been two years in-the-making, but the deal is done on a downtown Oshkosh hotel project.
The new City Center Hotel will be a partnership between private investors, and the UW-Oshkosh Foundation. Developers hope this old hotel will breathe new life into a downtown, that desperately needs it.
They're calling it an extreme makeover. Renovating the old Park Plaza in Oshkosh and turning it into multi-purpose hotel. It's a boost for the downtown. Business owners say they've been waiting for this day for a long time.
When Chanda Anderson heard about her new neighbor, she had to for herself.
"This is the best news that I have heard in a year," said Chanda Anderson, owner of the Carmel Crisp & Cafe.
By mid-Tuesday morning, the deal was sealed. Two hotel investors, and the UW-Oshkosh Foundation, paid $2.1 million dollars for the old Park Plaza Hotel.
"This is gonna be a major total makeover," said Richard Wells, UW-Oshkosh Chancellor.
It will take nine million dollars to refurbish 179 rooms, and restaurant. The new City Center Hotel will generate money for scholarships, and provide hands-on experience for hotel-restaurant progams coming soon to the university. And just across the street, the Oshkosh Convention Center is waiting for its first major event, in three years.
"We have not had the opportunity to bring in that convention, and the meeting business that we know we can attract here," said John Casper, CEO, of the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce.
"This will enable people to do that. Then people will be spending the night, and dining, not just in the hotel restaurant here, but in restaurants throughout the downtown," said Mark Rohloff, Oshkosh City Manager.
Caramel Crisp & Cafe is already planning.
"Then I have a gift shop, and then the gift shop gets bigger, and bigger. Now I need more tables, so we're adding on 1,500 square feet. I'll figure it out now," said Anderson.
The hotel will be closed during the renovations, but developers expect the new City Center Hotel to be open, by beginning of the year.
