Woman Facing Foreclosure Gets Scammed
A Shawano county woman looking for hope to save her home, finds only more financial heartache. Nancy DesJarlais gave $1700 to a company that promised to solve her foreclosure problem. But she claims the company took her money and ran. A spokesperson with the Better Business Bureau says Nancy fell for a common scam, where companies claim to keep homeowners who fall behind from losing their homes. The BBB warns the companies often do not fulfill their promises to help customers modify their loans and often just pocket the money. The BBB says these scams are common, and there isn't much victims can do once they've signed a contract or given the company money.
DesJarlais and her husband were facing foreclosure on their Shawano County home when a letter came from American Law Centers, promising to help them stay in their home. “I did a lot to make it our home and now I was going to be out, no place to go, I was really upset, I didn't know what to do I felt like a total fool,” she said.
NBC 26 attempted to contact American Law Centers for comment, but emails were not returned and the phone number was disconnected. If you're in a similar situation, experts suggest contacting HUD or the Federal Housing And Urban Development program for help.
