Irene Delays Wisconsin Troops From Coming Home
MILWAUKEE (AP) - Tropical Storm Irene stranded an Army Reserve combat engineering unit from Wausau on the way home from Afghanistan. The family readiness group leader with the 428th
Engineer Company says about 120 Wisconsin soldiers were stuck at Fort Dix in New Jersey, which shut down Saturday while Irene was still a hurricane. She said they weren't sure if they'd be able to fly out on Monday.
Meanwhile, help to the East Coast is on the way from Wisconsin. Gov. Scott Walker has authorized “National Guard” helicopters, equipment and personnel to be deployed to areas affected by the storm.
Local crews from the “American Red Cross” are also assisting. They’re expected to be in the New York area for the next 2-3 weeks.
