AWOL Inmate Fatally Shot Had Record Of Fleeing
EAU CLAIRE, Wisconsin (AP) - The jail inmate fatally shot by an Eau Claire officer after leading police on a chase in a stolen SUV had a record of fleeing from authorities and drug crimes.
Twenty-four-year-old Christian Peterson, of Wausau, was shot and killed after he tried to climb into a pickup truck stopped at a Culver's drive-through window Friday. Police say they were chasing Peterson because he had been involved in two hit-and-run crashes and an armed home invasion in Eau Claire in which he stole the SUV. Authorities say he failed to return to the Marathon County Jail Sept. 20 and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram says Peterson was jailed in Chippewa County in 2010 for fleeing an officer. He was also sentenced to prison in 2011 for fleeing an officer and drug possession.
