Milwaukee cop critical after hit-and-run crash
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Milwaukee police say a motorist drove on the wrong side of the road and jumped a curb, striking a uniformed police officer as he stood outside his squad car.
Police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz says the driver fled after the crash, which happened Sunday afternoon. She says 37-year-old officer Frank Vrtochnick remained in critical condition Monday evening.
Schwartz says police are looking for the suspect and vehicle. She says they're seeking a dark mid-sized sedan that's missing a passenger-side mirror and likely has front-end damage. Anyone with information is asked to call 414-935-7360.
Police Chief Edward Flynn says the department's thoughts and prayers are with the officer and his family. He says he appeals to the public to provide any information possible.
