Scocus returns to head Veterans Affairs
MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Former Wisconsin Veterans Affairs Secretary John Scocos has his old job back.
Gov. Scott Walker announced the appointment Thursday, saying Scocos' experience will be beneficial as the agency explores options to improve the solvency of the Veterans Trust Fund and begins operation of a new veteran's nursing home.
Last month, Walker signed a law that gives the governor the power to appoint the secretary. Previously, the choice was made by the Wisconsin Board of Veterans Affairs. Scocos and the board had a rocky relationship, leading to his firing in November 2009. Scocos then sued the agency, claiming his dismissal violated of a federal law protecting the jobs of active military service members. Scocos served two tours in Iraq. His lawsuit is pending.
Walker appointed Iraq war veteran Jason Johns as deputy secretary.
