Update: Packers Confirm Woodson's Release
GREEN BAY, Wis.-- The Green Bay Packers have informed 36-year-old defensive back Charles Woodson he will be released with two years left on his contract.
NFL.com first reported the move on Friday and it was confirmed by The Associated Press with Carl Poston, Woodson's agent. The team has not commented.
Poston says Woodson is motivated to continue his career with a Super Bowl contender.
Woodson signed a five-year deal before the 2010 season that was worth as much as $55 million. He missed nine games during the 2012 regular season because of a broken right collarbone and played in two postseason games for the Packers.
Woodson was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2009 and the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1998.
Woodson tweeted from his winery Twitter account, "Thank you Green Bay, it was a great run!"
NFL.COM's Ian Rapoport talked with Woodson's agent. "They're getting ready to release him. It's part of the business," agent Carl Poston told Rapaport. "I just talked to him. He sounds like he has a lot of football left. "He'd like to go play for a contender, win another Super Bowl."
Woodson moved to safety last season and was set to earn $9 million in 2013. "He's not worth that any longer," Rapaport said.
