Dark Reality: Sexual Assaults in Green Bay
GREEN BAY, Wis.-- It's a terror no woman wants to face, sexual assault or rape. In Green Bay, the overall crime rate is impressively low. But there is one exception, sexual assaults. "It's alarming from a law enforcement perspective," says Lt. Kevin Warych.
in 2010 there were 176 sexual assaults reported to the Green Bay Police Department in 2010. Those troubling numbers come from a news study released from the Wisconsin Office of Justice Assistance. "We have to work collectively to formulate some kind of response to this," Susan Lockwood, with the Sexual Assault Center.
According to data from the FBI's Statistical Analysis unit, there are 21 cities with populations the same or slightly larger than Green Bay. All but one of those cities reported lower sexual assault cases that Green Bay. "That's alarming," Lockwood explained. "We have to work with whether it be the crisis center, the sexual assault center. We have to work with all of these people and these organizations to formulate responses to this, so that we can lower that number.
If there is good news, it's that the number of forcible rapes over the last 3 years has slowly declined. "know who your friends are," Lt. Warych reminded. "Don't put yourself in bad situations that would allow them to become victims.
Always go with your gut if a situation feels uncomfortable. Trust your instincts and remove yourself from the situation.
