Darboy's Charlie Knuth gets a special holiday surprise.

When Vernon Newhouse of Freedom heard about Charlie's recent battle in a Minnesota hospital after a second stem cell transplant, he felt an instant connection to the little boy--and wanted this Christmas to be extra bright for Charlie.

Instead of coming down Santa Claus Lane, Newhouse came down Trailwood Lane in Darboy Wednesday night. He didn't have a sleigh, but a firetruck. Dressed to the nines as Santa, Newhouse surprised Charlie at his home delivering hundreds of dollars worth of gifts he collected in donations throughout the community.

"I heard a lot about Charlie, and I thought maybe there's something Santa can do to make Charlie a happy boy. He's had a tough year. I've heard about it and Santa thought he could help him," Newhouse said.

Newhouse tells us he also gave Charlie $600 he raised in donations. There were also gifts for mom and dad and Charlie's brothers and sisters.
