MADISON, Wis.-- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reports 243,739 deer were harvested during the 2012 Gun Deer Hunt. The season ended on Sunday and the DNR reports the early numbers are up more than 7% from a year ago.

The agency says 114,822 bucks and 128, 917 antlerless deer were registered across the state.

That number is likely to rise as the week progresses.

DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp says this year's numbers are a sign of Wisconsin's status as a deer hunting destination. "Hunting is about family, friends, fun and tradition."

More than 600,000 hunters were licensed to hunt in Wisconsin. 29,000 were recorded as first time hunters. New female hunters accounted for 33% of that number and another 33% were youth, under the age of 17.
