Packers Game Makes for a Tricky Walk Home
Ashwaubenon-- A big difference between Thursday Packers games and weekend games is area children are walking home for school as thousands are driving to Lambeau.
Valley View Elementary is a mere three blocks away from Brenda Duquaine's home. Lambeau Field is only four blocks away. "It's a joy to live around here for that reason," says Duquaine, "but it does make life interesting for the kids." On days like Thursday, her daughter doesn't walk home, alone. "There are a lot of days that your child could walk home by themselves but traffic is a lot heavier and they are not always expecting a small child to be walking on an intersection," Duquaine adds.
Sandi Schroeder lives a few blocks down from Lambeau, too. "People don't see the little kids. They want to get where they are going. There could be some major accidents," Schroeder said. That's where Dick LaPlant comes in. He was a "railroad man" for 40 years and now he's been a crossing guard for Ashwaubenon Schools for 16 years. He's had close calls and today the traffic is busy than usuall. People may not pay attention on any day of the week let alon Packers Games but on school days he's doing his best to get your kids home safe. Drivers can do their part, too.
Parents say Ashwaubenon schools had a couple early-outs last year when the Packers made the playoffs, they say that definetely helped against the added challenge of game-day traffic.
