A 16-year-old student from Plymouth High School is dead after a crash on County Highway U.
The Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office has identified the deceased as Jodeen Hinz.
The crash happened around 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday just east of Elderberry Lane.
Authorities say Hinz was driving westbound with a 16-year-old passenger when she encountered black ice.
According to the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office, Hinz lost control of the vehicle and collided with trees in the ditch.
Police say Jodeen was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.
The 16-year-old passenger was not injured.
NBC26 spoke with a family friend of Hinz. Rick Riemer said it is a big loss for family and friends.
"She was a very outgoing and fun person," he said.
Riemer knew Hinz and her family through their work with showing horses. He said Hinz was talented and passionate.
"I don't know if this was just shock but I talked to her dad this morning and he said he didn't know if he'd be able to show horses again," said Riemer.
The students and staff at Plymouth High School, where Hinz was a sophomore, were also grieving Tuesday.
"We are grieving the loss of one of our students, who passed away in a car accident this morning," Plymouth School District Superintendent Dr. Carrie Dassow said. "We are very saddened by this event, and our condolences go out to the family."
Dr. Carrie Dassow went on to say students are encouraged to stay at school where counselors and other support are available.
