Judge Issues Temporary Injunction in Berlin Indians Nickname Dispute
School District to Keep Nickname for Now
BERLIN, Wis.-A Green Lake Circuit Court Judge has barred the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction from forcing the Berlin School District to change it's 'Indians' nickname and logo. A lawsuit was filed by five taxpayers within the Berlin school district to have the nickname changed. The district faced a final order to replace the mascot or face charges.
The injunction, issued by Judge Mark T. Slate late Thursday afternoon, is temporary until a hearing on a permanent injunction can be held.
Both sides in the dispute are expected to meet with the court within the next 30 or 60 days.
