One person is dead and others are displaced after a fire in a Sheboygan apartment building.

The fire broke out at 4:20am on Sunday at 3615 South Business Drive. According to Sheboygan Fire Department Battalion Chief Keith Risse, the building has approximately 40 efficiency apartments. It is a former one story motel that was converted into the Embers Apartments.

Sheboygan Police were the first on the scene and began evacuating tenants. The Red Cross has set up a temporary shelter at Farnsworth Middle School. They're providing meals and personal hygiene items for affected residents.

The State Fire Marshal has been called to the scene. Battalion Chief Risse says the cause of the fire and where it started are unknown at this time.

Half of the apartment complex is "completely destroyed" according to Chief Risse. Residents tell NBC26 they are being told none of the apartments will be rebuilt as the complex may be leveled.

Firefighters from Kohler, Sheboygan Falls, Haven and the Town of Wilson also helped fight the fire.
