In the era of new CBA football, the Packers may only practice once a day but they get their money's worth. Two hours and forty minutes worth in full pads this morning.
Here's what we liked:
-The play of Brian Bulaga. He took on Nick Perry twice during 1 on 1 's and dominated both times. Bulaga is a pro bowl player in the making.
-The situation at cornerback. You can't have too many corners who can play and we've already mentioned Casey Hayward's penchant for showing up in a positive way. Today, it was Davon House's turn. 2 INT's and a pass defensed. The light may be going on for last year's 4th rounder.
-The development of D.J. Williams. He came to Green Bay as a receiving tight end but he's making big strides in becoming a "complete" TE. During 1 on 1 run blocking versus the outside linebackers, his efforts were impressive.
-The emphasis on physicality in the secondary. There's no patty-caking around in their tackling drills and the time they spent on block protection was serious business as well.
-Leaders leading by example. Charles Woodson had a pick and Clay Matthews blew up a run and had a pass defensed in the red zone. Good players practicing good. It tends to send the right message to the entire team.
Here's what we didn't like:
-The lack of progress shown by DE Lawrence Guy. 7th rounder in '11, but a concussion during camp put him on IR for the entire regular season. Got stoned by free agent rookie tackle Shea Allard during 1 on 1 run blocking drill.
-The somewhat ordinary start by 2nd rounder Jerel Worthy. He can be explosive but we haven't seen much of that when he's tangling with blockers. Haven't seen the suddenness it takes to disengage.
-Old school is out. Is the running game going the way of the dinosaur? The drill is called team runs in the red zone and the first two plays were passes.
-A bad shotgun snap by Jeff Saturday. It was his second of camp but over his previous 13 seasons, he's developed a reputation for being nearly flawless in this aspect of his game
Sick List Shrinkage: Jermichael Finley, who suffered a mild concussion during the first practice, worked a limited basis today.
Back in the Fold: Anthony Hargrove, who had to leave town for personal reasons. Still getting a read on him as a player but he does add juice to the party.
Coming Attractions: Practice #5, Full Pads, Tomorrow 8:15 AM
