The View from the Sideline - Practice #17

With a game coming up on Thursday, today qualified as a "Thursday" in a typical (game on Sunday) NFL week, and that's when much of the heavy lifting preparation-wise is done.

Larry McCarren: Picking up the Pieces after Browns Game

Now that it's history, the important thing about the Packers 35-10 loss to the Browns is how it relates to what happens on September 9th and beyond. After all, the point of the whole exercise is to get ready for the regular season.

    Benson Joins Packers for Practice

Never mind that he was in "shells" and everyone else was in full pads, "the" story at Ray Nitschke Field today was the presence of Cedric Benson.

Primer for Packers vs. Browns Game

Preseason games are more about individual evaluations than team results, (quick, what was the score of last season's preseason game between Green Bay and Cleveland), and with that in mind, here's a few individuals to keep an eye on Thursday Night.

Larry McCarren's Training Camp Report: Pack Moves Inside

Bad for the railbirds, a non-factor for the team, that was this morning's practice which was moved indoors due to heavy rain. The Hutson Center is big enough and tall enough to handle any practice as scripted. And yes, every drill and every play of a workout is scripted beforehand.

Larry McCarren's Training Camp Report: Day One in the Books

An OTA by any other name would smell as sweet. Truth be told, when conducted in "shells" (light shoulder protection) as opposed to full pads, a training camp practice is much like the work that's done during the offseason camps, and today's practice was conducted in shells.

    A Reinforcement at Running Back

Late Sunday afternoon, the Packers announced the widely predicted signing of Cedric Benson. He comes to Green Bay with some numbers, 1,000 plus yards in each of his past 3 seasons as a Bengal, but he is 29 years old and a lot of his yards come the old fashioned way, he earns them after contact.

Star Studded 'Hump Day' at Packers Training Camp

It was hump day of the practice week and faces in the crowd included former Packers GM Ron Wolf, John Madden and Commissioner Roger Goodell. After an off-season of suspensions and concussions, the commissioner is now looking at starting the season without a labor agreement with officials. The league is already training Arena League and D-2 refs as replacements. Stay Tuned.

Prep for the Preseason Opener in San Diego

The Packers took Ray Nitschke Field Tuesday in what qualifies as their only practice devoted to preparation for Thursday night's preseason opener in San Diego. They don't practice on the day before games. The workout was originally scheduled for "full pads", but considering his ever-expanding injury list, Mike McCarthy opted to go in "shells." That accomplishes two things: it keeps the healthy guys healthy and it takes the air out of the balloon as far as aggression goes. (Normal reaction after spending 8 straight practices in full pads and with plenty of rough stuff.)

    Less is Best

It's that time in training camp. Assorted injuries reach a point of critical mass and practice gets cut short. Mike McCarthy trimmed about 45 minutes off tonight's workout thanks to an injury report that's in the double digits, but overall, still a solid session.
