The Better Business Bureau in Wisconsin says complaints about fitness clubs have increased by more than 90 percent in the last 5 years. "This time of year many people are seeing and feeling the after-effects of those holiday parties and big meals and are resolving to join a gym and lose weight," said Randall Hoth, president/CEO of the Wisconsin BBB. "The Trend we are seeing in complaints against fitness clubs tells us that consumers need to read the fine print on the contract before they sign, and keep a close eye on their bank statements to make sure they're not getting billed more than they should be."
Viewers came to NBC26, wanting to know what's going on with "Club West" in Neenah. The gym's been closed for about a week and a half. "I can't access their website any more, we used to get a monthly newsletter, and we are not getting that anymore," said Ken Britt, a member of the gym. On Monday, a sign on the door said the gym would re-open on January 2nd. It said they were waiting for WE energies to turn the power back on after a gas leak. "With the economy the way it is, if they are not turning the power on, there could be another reason for it," said Tom McHugh, another member. According to court records, the property owner of "Club West" is going through foreclosure proceedings. So far, NBC26 has been unable to get a hold of anyone from the gym.
Earlier this year, LA Weightloss facilities in Northeastern Wisconsin also shut their doors, due to tough economic times. So if you do plan on signing a gym contract for the New Year, the BBB recommends you 1) read the fine print of your contract 2) agree to pay a monthly fee, not a yearly free and 3) closely review your bank statements.
