You can't go online without seeing all the offers out there. Pop-up ads for pills and supplements that promise big benefits are all over the place, but one woman came to NBC26 after she learned an $85 lesson.
Nancy Freier says this "risk free" trial for Acai-Pure was too tempting to pass up.
Freier "I just clicked and went and read and I saw Oprah's picture, and I saw some testimonials I probably read a few. It looked good, it was free, so I ordered it," she said.
Her free sample came with only a shipping charge, but her next credit card bill was a different story.
"I was charged two more times for this product I did not order," Freier said.
According to the fine print, however, she did. It says, once you get your freebie, if you don't call to cancel in 14 days, monthly shipments and charges are coming your way.
JoEllen Wollangk of the Better Business Bureau said, "When you try to call them to stop it, even within their 14 or 30 day or whatever time period they give you, often they are not reachable."
And the Acai-Pure offer is just one of many out there. The parent company Central Coast Nurtraceuticals Inc. has more than a dozen sites. Hoodiastar.com, colopure.com, pomclear.com, to name a few, all promise great results and no risk.
The Better Business Bureau has received nearly 700 hundred complaints about the company.
"There are a number of complaints and many of those complaints," Wollangk said. "They have not even responded to, so this company has no interest in customer service."
That means the customer has to take care of it, by canceling their credit card, or telling their credit card company to prohibit any future charges.
That's what Nancy Freier did, and she says she'll never put herself in that position again. "You can't see somebody face to face, and once your credit card number is out there, it's out there," she said.
