MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A hearing is set for Wednesday on whether the Kewaunee School District can keep Indians as its nickname.

The state Department of Public Instruction received a complaint in June over the school's use of the nickname and its logo featuring a profile of someone wearing a feathered headdress.

A new state law allows the department to order schools to drop race-based nicknames and logos if they are determined to be discriminatory.

Last week the department ordered Osseo-Fairchild to stop using its Chieftains nickname. That was the first order of its kind under the law that went into effect in May.

A third complaint against the Mukwonago Indians is pending.

The hearing on Wednesday allows the school to defend its use of the nickname and for those who oppose it to make their case.
