MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Gov. Jim Doyle says the economic recession "no doubt" made 2009 his most challenging year in office. In a year-end interview at the governor's residence, Doyle said
the hardest part was meeting with people who lost their jobs through no fault of their own.

The governor also had to make deep cuts to balance the state budget in 2009 and the difficult decision not to run for a third four-year term, a choice he says he regrets on some days. Doyle says he is proud of how Wisconsin responded to the recession, pointing to extended unemployment benefits, expanded health care programs, and record enrollment in the University of Wisconsin System.

He says new tax incentives also helped convince some companies such as Mercury Marine stay and expand in Wisconsin.
