PLYMOUTH- Volunteers at the Camo Quilt Project in Plymouth make literally thousands of quilts for soldiers serving overseas. But now, their work has taken on a new meaning as they try to honor a request made by one of the soldiers killed during the tragedy in Fort Hood.

The Camo Quilt Project started with just one quilt: a gift from Linda Wieck to her son-in-law serving in Iraq. Now, it’s become a huge project involving hundreds of volunteers and thousands of quilts. One of those quilts went to Staff Sgt. Amy Krueger of Kiel.

“Amy herself sent me an e-mail thanking me for the quilt, and then she asked for 45 more quilts for the rest of her unit,” Wieck said.

When Linda learned Krueger was killed in the shootings in Fort Hood, she wanted to honor her request and deliver the quilts to the 467th Combat Stress Unit out of Madison, which suffered multiple casualties in the attack.

“They’re all going to be a little bit more special. We’re going to mark them all with a special ribbon, and we have a special card made to go in them all,” said Wieck, speaking about the quilts they are making.

As word is spreading about the amazing work done by the Camo Quilt Project, requests for the quilts are coming from all over the country. The volunteers are about 200 quilts behind, but they aren’t planning on letting up.

“I feel that it’s the least that I can do to make their life a little more comfortable when they’re overseas,” Wieck said.

The Camo Quilt Project is always in need of volunteers and donations.
