Drunk Driving Grant
The Manitowoc Police Department is cracking down on drunk driving by using grant money from the state.

It was a battle royal at De Pere City Hall and both sides came ready to fight.

Around 20 De Pere police officers came to show a vote of no confidence in Chief Derek Beiderwieden.

"These indiscretions are inconsistent with the roles and responsibilities of the Chief of Police and are detrimental to the City of De Pere," says Sgt. Ryan Glime.  "As a result, ninety-six percent of association members voted that they DO NOT have confidence in the Chief of Police."

Officers say the fight with the chief has been brewing for several years, but was recently pushed over the top when Cpt. Brian Messerschmidt was suspended without a good reason.

Citizens also slammed the chief by saying the working conditions are horrible.

"Employees are afraid of doing their jobs," says Donna Gilson.  "Wondering of what they say will cause them to be walked out."

"I don't know what recourse our officers have than to come to you with this," says another citizen speaking out at the meeting.

Speakers asked the city council for help and pointed fingers at the Mayor Walsh and City Administrator Larry Delo for sweeping this problem under the rug.

"I think it's a slap in the face," says Mayor Walsh.

He says this issue should not have been brought up in the public and in front of the city council because it's an internal issue.

Chief Beiderwieden says it's an issue he was working with the police union on.

He says he believed the discussions were going well until officers made a public outcry.

"I do feel there's a desperate act to defame my good name," says Chief Beiderwieden.
