Wis. lawmakers approve audit of veterans homes

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Lawmakers have ordered their auditors to investigate the management of Wisconsin's two nursing homes for veterans.

The Joint Committee on Audit on Wednesday directed the Legislative Audit Bureau to conduct a review of the Wisconsin Veterans Homes in King and Union Grove.

Auditors are expected to investigate the homes' purchasing, handling of donations, and administrative costs. They are also expected to look into the propriety of millions of dollars transferred from the King home to support Union Grove.

The Board of Veterans Affairs requested the audit after discovering more than $700,000 in spending at the King home that had not been authorized by lawmakers. The commandant of the King home, Bill Crowley, was replaced.
